The Torre di Capo d'Uomo, an ancient sighting station

Leisure and entertainment Practical information

Monte Argentario - In the area of Monte Argentario you can still admire the remains of some medieval watchtowers. One of these is the Torre di Capo d'Uomo, which you can also reach if you want to take a long walk. The tower or, better said, what remains of it, stands on a rocky spur jutting out into the sea. To get there, you must first cross a grove and then climb among the rocks in a winding journey that becomes increasingly uphill.

(continues below the video)

The last stretch before reaching the tower is bordered by a stone wall, which can be assumed to have been built with the help of donkeys, given that the stretch is quite steep. All along the way you can enjoy a breathtaking view, but only by arriving at the tower and climbing inside it you really get the idea of the breadth of vision that it allowed to have. The tower was used to spot enemy ships and to communicate with other towers. It was used first by the Aldobrandeschi, by the Graducato of Tuscany and then by the Spaniards. Today it is a ruin eroded by the wind.
