The artistic beauties of the Pomposa di Codigoro Abbey

Culture

Codigoro - In Codigoro there is a very old and very beautiful monastic complex, the Pomposa Abbey. Today it is a destination for pilgrims and tourists who love architectural and artistic attractions, but it was once a very important center of power. The Abbey, which was inhabited by Benedictine monks, was founded in the 8th century and owes its name to the fact that it stood on an islet called insula pomposia.

In the 11th century it experienced its period of maximum splendor and development, as King Otto II of Saxony gave the abbot temporal power, making him a de facto prince. In those years many writers passed through this place: Guido d'Arezzo, Dante Alighieri, and later Torquato Tasso. But when the river was diverted, this place became swampy and unhealthy and the abbey gradually lost the importance it once had. Today it is a very interesting structure to visit, consisting of 3 buildings: church with bell tower, monastery and Palazzo della Ragione. There are beautiful interior frescoes and varied exterior decorations.
