Visit Antrodoco

Events Culture Food and wine Folklore and traditions

Antrodoco - Antrodoco is a medieval village in Lazio, in the province of Rieti; it rises to 525 meters and has 3,000 inhabitants. Its strategic position on the Via Salaria, between Rome and L'Aquila has always made it a privileged center of trade. Even today it is the commercial heart of the Velino valley. Evidence of this is the beautiful Palazzo Pallini, in full liberty style, owned by Nicola Pallini, founder of an important company of liqueurs and syrups.

The etymology of the name indicates being in the mountains, and in fact Antrodoco is surrounded by Mount Giano, Mount Nuria and Terminillo. A place with a tourist and naturalistic vocation, it offers the visitor countless possibilities for excursions on foot or by bike. The historic urban core has now incorporated the remains of a castle and the walls of the late Roman age. The church of Santa Maria extra moenia is a jewel of Romanesque art, built in the 5th century on an ancient temple dedicated to Diana, it was restored in the 9th and 10th centuries; the interior with three naves preserves frescoes from the 14th-15th centuries. The 13th century bell tower and the hexagonal baptistery are worthy of note. In the village there are various cultural and eno-gastronomic manifestations and events. We remember the autumn festival where we celebrate the chestnut anthrodocano, a valuable variety of IGP chestnuts. The sagra della scoppozza, watermelon infused in mulled wine. The feast of the gastaldato, procession and historical re-enactment of medieval life with final palio.
