A brief history of Pace del Mela

Culture Practical information Curiosities

Pace del Mela - On the hills that slope down from the Peloritani mountains towards the sea, on the Tyrrhenian side of the Messina province, is the town of Pace del Mela. This was formerly a fiefdom under the Benedictine monastery of San Placido di Calomero, a monastery that remained at the center of the life of the town until the beginning of the last century.

However, it was at the beginning of the twentieth century that Pace del Mela began to take on the appearance it still has today, dividing itself between the hilly village and the more recent one near the sea. In the hills the main activity is the cultivation of citrus fruits, while near the sea there are many industrial and artisanal activities. At Pace del Mela you can still breathe an air of other times, life is on a human scale. The church built around the middle of the eighteenth century dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario is valuable. In the center of the square in front there is a fountain, characterized by the sculpture of a sea horse surmounted by a puttino. Unfortunately the latter was left without a head! The fountain is attributed to Giovan Battista Vaccarini.
