History and cuisine in Brienza, in the shadow of the Caracciolo castle

Culture Food and wine Curiosities

Brienza - The origin of Brienza, in Basilicata, dates back to the Lombard domination, in the seventh century after Christ. The village appears as a small inhabited center perched on a hill, 713 meters high. The Caracciolo castle stands out from all the other buildings, an ancient fortress of Angevin origin. The circular keep stands out, around which the walls and an open-air staircase unfold.

Traditionally it is said that the castle had 365 rooms, one for each day of the year. Whether this statement is true or not does not matter: the fortress is a pearl for its beauty and charm, both during the day and at sunset. The castle splits Brienza into two: on one side we find the part of the village still inhabited, graceful and lively, while on the other side we find the remains (as crystallized over time) of the ancient houses abandoned during the Irpinia earthquake. It is worth visiting the MuLabo, the Laboratory Museum of Arts and Landscape, where it is possible to follow multimedia itineraries to learn about the beauties, history and culture of Brienza. Brienza is channeled into the great Lucanian culinary tradition: we therefore find an abundance of sausages (sausage and soppressata in primis), the famous crusco pepper and patatelle (made with eggs and mixed goat and cow cheeses).
