A jewel recognized by the FAI: the Cattolica di Stilo

Stilo - In Stilo there is a monument that until a few years ago was little or nothing known, despite its valuable historical and artistic value. They call it the 'Cattolica', and it is a kind of cross between a church and a mosque, a bizarre construction that demonstrates the union and encounter between East and West. It is located a short distance from the town of Stilo and what you can immediately notice, entering it, is the warmth that surrounds the visitor.

The construction dates back to a period between the 10th and 11th centuries, therefore it is characterized by a Byzantine style which, however, is already fading into the Norman. The frescoes that decorate the interior of the structure date back to the same period, but some are even later, from the 12th century. Everything conveys a sense of transcendence, the desire to get closer to God. Thanks to the commitment of a citizen of Stilo fond of this structure, the Cattolica has been listed among the assets registered by the FAI and taken under the protective wing of the association, who took charge of his enlightenment.
