Castelnuovo del Garda: a city to discover

Culture

Castelnuovo del Garda - Castelnuovo del Garda is a town of about 12,000 inhabitants in the province of Verona. As the name suggests, the city overlooks Lake Garda and thanks to the high quality of life its population has grown a lot in recent years. The country became infamous when on 11 April 1848 it was set on fire and more than 100 citizens were killed by Austrian troops.

To commemorate this tragedy, plaques were placed in the streets of the center. The symbolic monument of Castelnuovo is the Visconti Tower built in 1387 at the behest of Gian Galeazzo Visconti. The battlements and the clock were only added in the 19th century. Very beautiful is also the New Parish Church of Santa Maria which has incorporated the entrance and the main facade of the previous church. Outside, two niches have been created that house the statues of Saints Peter and Paul made by the sculptor Angelo Sartori. Among the most precious works that can be admired inside the building are an oil canvas depicting the Nativity of Mary and an organ installed in the late 1800s.
