The elliptical castle

Castello di Beseno. - The fortified complex stretches across the hill overlooking the Vallagarina and the Rio Cavallo river. Dating back to the 12th century, it was granted by Count Appiano to the vassal Da Beseno. Remained in the government of the family, he lived a period of neglect, due to the hereditary contention of the brothers Enghelberto and Oldorico.

Later it became the property of the Castelbarco family, but a fire destroyed it in the 16th century. The reconstruction changed its vocation, becoming a residence as well as a defensive fortress. Inside, in fact, you can visit large courtyards and well-finished buildings as well as the defensive bastions and watchtowers. At the end of the 18th century the castle resisted the assault of the Napoleonic troops, thanks to the intervention of the Austrians, who intervened just before the defeat. In 1800 it again experienced a phase of abandonment until it was donated in 1973 to the autonomous province of Trento, which restructured it and set up the Buonconsiglio Castle Museum. A beautiful path in the oak and holm oak wood leads to the castle where you can still admire a large part of the majestic structure.
