The Visitor Center which explains the discovery of the Man from Altamura

Culture

Altamura - In 1993 in the territory of the municipality of Altamura was made a discovery unique of its kind in the region, perhaps in Italy, perhaps in all of Europe. A group of speleologists had ventured into the caves below the Dolina called Pulo, having sensed that there was a complex of karst cavities below. Advancing through narrow tunnels, they finally came to the end of a cave in which a complete skeleton was found.

(continues below the video)

At first it was believed to be an example of a prehistoric man who had lived in Pulo, but then it was understood that he was much older, a pre-Neanderthal who lived about 100,000 years ago. The exceptional nature of the discovery lies in the fact that the man from Altamura, as he was called, is intact, while the other findings always concern fragments. At the Visitor Center you can view the video that demonstrates the various stages of the discovery, but not the skeleton, which has remained in its place. In fact it is completely calcified and it is impossible to remove it. Even the caves cannot be visited, as they have paths that are inaccessible to non-experts.
