Avellino - The city of Avellino rises in the Sabato Valley, lying in the heart of a large basin of the Campania Apennines dominated by the mountain massifs of the Picentini and Partenio. The original nucleus was founded on a rocky spur the city surrounded by defensive walls and before the twentieth century the castle was built by the Lombards. In 1137 Ruggero turned the castle into a pile of ruins, it was then rebuilt by order of Alfonso I of Aragon in the 15th century; under the Caracciolo dynasty the city acquired considerable importance, enriching itself with public works of significant artistic value including the Bellerofonte Fountain (continues below the video)
