castello di vogogna - Vogogna rises in the natural park of Val Grande in the lower Ossola valley. It was a fief of the Duke of Milan, Giovanni Visconti, who enlarged the pre-existing castle on the top of the medieval core. The building was to be a garrison to defend the whole valley and phalanxes of the army were concentrated there. The semicircular tower had the role of a prison, which it maintained until the Fascist era.

You can still read the inscriptions and the intentions of the prisoners such as: always tell the truth. The castle was surrounded by a moat and provided with a drawbridge that no longer exists, on the contrary the walls are still visible. In 1450 Vogogna fell into the hands of Borromeo who maintained the role of lookout and defense of the castle. Today it can be visited all year round with the museum of the wolf, returned to live in the park and the war museum with testimonies of military life, the prison, siege weapons and healing herbs. The visit ends among the fortified battlements where you can admire the view of the mountains.
