The small town of Ascrea

Nature Culture

Ascrea - On the steep slopes of the mountain overlooking the Turano lake rises the small town of Ascrea, in the province of Rieti. The town originated in medieval times, after the abandonment of the inhabitants of the two villages of Bulgaretta and Mirandella. Probably the inhabitants of the villages settled in the territory of Ascrea because they were looking for protection from the new fortified settlement wanted by the lords of Collalto; who were the first feudal lords of the country.

The small town has a very vast feudal history, it was ceded to the Mareri and then to the Farnese, the Solderini and the Gentiles, the latter unified and ceded it to the Princes del Drago legitimate heirs. The hill on which Ascrea stands is bathed north by the waters of the artificial basin. The Turano lake was built on the river of the same name and was cheated in a dam, the works of which ended in 1939. The artificial lake acts as a hydroelectric basin that allows the production of electricity that allows agricultural and industrial development. The construction of the basin has changed the landscape without making it ugly, on the contrary, making it even more beautiful. Man in this area has been able to modify the landscape without ruining the beauty of what surrounded him.
