One day in San Marino

Culture Folklore and traditions

San Marino - San Marino is the oldest republic in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Our journey starts from the historic center; we arrive thanks to the cable car that takes us to the top of Mount Titano, from here, a wonderful panorama shows us Emilia Romagna, the Marche and the Adriatic Riviera. According to tradition, the city was founded by San Marino who, fleeing the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian, founded a small community on Mount Titano.

Shortly before his death, San Marino said that he would leave his followers free from the two powers, the papal one and that of the emperor, thus founding the independence of the republic which, even if it was recognized by the papal power, was questioned several times. . The second stop is the 'Cava dei Balestrieri', called 'quarry' because it is the place where the material to renovate the public building was extracted, and 'of the crossbowmen' because the site is used for crossbow shooting. We then head towards Piazza della Libertà, here is the Palazzo Pubblico, the most iconic building in San Marino, the seat of the government and the main administrative bodies and the Statue of Liberty. During a short stop, a characteristic recipe to try is the titan cake, two wafers in an orange sauce with a scoop of mozzarella. Our third stop is the basilica, completed in 1838, is dedicated to San Marino, and inside there are relics of the saint. The next stop is the panoramic garden, a splendid terrace where you can admire the entire Adriatic Riviera from above. The monuments that dominate the San Marino panorama are the 3 towers, Torre Guaita, where the inhabitants took shelter during the reprisals, Torre Cesta, where the guardhouse housed and Torre del Montale, used as a lookout. Moving then to Serravalle, we find the Jinja of San Marino, the first official Shinto temple made in Europe.
