Trabocchi coast

Costa dei Trabocchi - The Costa dei Trabocchi is a stretch of the Abruzzo coast extended along the Adriatica state road 16. The coast is characterized by the widespread presence of trabocchi, ancient fishing machines on stilts that according to some would be an invention of the Phoenicians. The coast is not homogeneous and in fact consists of sandy stretches, pebbles and high and rocky stretches; the coastal strip winds between the valley and hills, creating breathtaking landscapes.

The coast can be crossed via the green road, which can be traveled on with bicycles and scooters. Crossing the coast by bicycle allows you to better admire all the nature that surrounds us and to listen to the sound of the sea. The first overflow encountered along the route is located at the exit from the Torre del Moro; a tower built in the 16th century as a lookout tower. The Trabocco Mucchiola one of the most characteristic of the coast. Once you have entered the territory of San Vito Chietino you can admire two trabocchi in the old tourist port; a series of galleries take us to the inlet of Turchino where the Trabocco that inspired Gabriele d'Annunzio in his work 'The triumph of death' is located. In the stretch of Rocca San Giovanni stands the Benedictine abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, which dates back to the 7th century and built on the remains of the Temple of Venus, inside there is an underground crypt made with columns from the Roman temple, and some frescoes Giotteschi. Proceeding south you find yourself on the bridge over the Sangro river, after 5 km you will find the town of Dragoni. In the locality of Santo Stefano there are dunes with bright colors typical of the Mediterranean scrub. After several kilometers you arrive in the city of Vasco where noteworthy are the monument to the bather, a hymn to female beauty and the jetty that stretches like an arm towards the sea. San Salvo Marina gives the possibility to continue the green way to get to Molise. Crossing the 42 km by bicycle allows the visitor to fully enjoy the wonders of the coast and its surroundings.
