Goro the city of the river Po

Nature Culture Food and wine

Goro - Goro is an Italian town in the province of Ferrara. The city is part of the Po Delta Union; the town is in fact located in the southern part of the Po delta. The history of Goro is characterized by the continuous struggle of man against the waters of the sea and the river. The ancient artifacts of hydraulic control, such as Torre Palù, Torre Abate, Balanzetta and the Agrifoglio sewer, and the lighthouses that demonstrate how the territory is constantly changing, testify to this.

The eighteenth-century Torre Palù with its five low-arched basins equipped with still functioning Vinci doors was built to prevent the sea water from rising during high tide and served as a watchtower for decades. The Golo Volano cycle path runs along the eastern side of the Mesola wood; the famous pine forests that make up the city are nothing more than the memory of the passage of the Po. The natural reserve of the great wood of Mesola with its surface of 1058 hectares is one of the last lowland woods, included in the UNESCO heritage since '99 it protects over 53,600 hectares which include the river mouth and wet and wooded areas and sandy lines. Gorino is the only hamlet of Goro, reachable also thanks to the cycle path before entering the city you can not help but admire the pontoon bridge, a massive structure of iron and wood. Lanterna Vecchia is the ancient lighthouse that once illuminated the way of the sailors. The lantern was built in 1864 near the mouth, the progressive fluvial deposits however moved it further away from the sea making it useless. Today it is used as a naturalistic observatory of the Goro pocket; it can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by sea starting from the port of Gorino. To replace the Old Lantern, the Faro di Goro was built in 1951, built on the island of Love. In the area of the Gorino valley there is the most lagoon area, home to many birds that nest there. The Fish Market is the place where the fish auction is held every day. For each batch of fish, the traders concerned announce the purchase price to the auctioneer who gives the goods to the highest bidder. Fishing and tourism are the basis of the town's economy. Typical dish is pasta with clams that thrills all palates, even the most refined.
