The magic of the Val d'Orcia

Culture

Val d'Orcia - The Val d'Orcia is a magnificent territory that extends in the province of Siena and partly in that of Grosseto, up to the border with Umbria. For its naturalistic and cultural beauties in 2004 it was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Typical of this area are calanchi and biancane which make them assume an almost lunar aspect.

In the Val d'Orcia there are still traces of the Via Francigena which in ancient times was traveled by pilgrims who went to Rome. Picturesque town is San Quirico d'Orcia with its medieval buildings and floral gardens. Of great interest in this village is the Collegiate Church, an ancient sacred building which has a portal decorated with sculptures of sacred Christian iconography. For those who want to take a relaxing walk, a visit to the Horti Leonini is recommended. In the hamlet of Bagno Vignoni, on the other hand, there are relaxing sulphurous spas. Also worth a visit is the village of Pienza built by Pope Pius II to transform it into the ideal city according to the philosophy of Renaissance Humanism. Very suggestive in Radicofani are the Rocca and the Palazzo della Posta where important writers and nobles stopped. Finally, it is advisable to taste the Brunello di Montalcino considered one of the best wines in the world thanks to the particular geology of the soil in which the vineyards arise, which gives it its unmistakable flavor.
