The splendid Melfi

Melfi - Melfi is a town of 17543 inhabitants in the province of Potenza. The tour of this town starts from the Fontana del Bagno, an ancient wash house used in the past by families who did not have running water at home. Continue to the historic center where the interesting Church of the Carmine is located. In Piazza Umberto I instead stands the beautiful Palazzo della Corte.

Climbing a staircase you then arrive at the Castle of Melfi with its bridge that crosses a moat. Inside the building there is the famous Sarcophagus of Rapolla and an important museum that houses many ancient objects. Scattered around the town there are numerous statues of children who try their hand at the games of the past. We then reach Via Normanni where the house of the famous anti-fascist politician Francesco Saverio Nitti is located. Also of interest are the Ruggero II Theater and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its Norman-style bell tower. Then we move on to the Diocesan Museum which has its flagship in the Throne Room. Palazzo Pastore and the Church of Sant'Antonio are also worth a visit. Finally, do not miss the Porta Venosina and the municipal villa.
