Pienza, pearl of the Val d'Orcia
Culture
Pienza - Pienza is a wonderful medieval Tuscan village, in the province of Siena. Located at 491 meters above sea level, it has 2,200 inhabitants. It dominates the Val d'Orcia, a land of enchanted landscapes that project back in time. Lying on a hill overlooking a vast panorama, it owes its fortune to a humanist Pope: Pius II. In 1462 he had the ancient village of Corsignano restored which took the name of Pienza. (continues below the video)
UNESCO World Heritage Site, the visit cannot ignore the Cathedral, built in 1459 on an ancient Romanesque church, dedicated to the Assumption. Noteworthy is Palazzo Piccolomini, whose facade is characterized by architectural elements typical of the Renaissance and present with many similarities in Florence. Inside, the perfectly proportioned courtyard stands out, punctuated by travertine columns with Corinthian capitals. From here you can access the wonderful hanging garden from which you can enjoy a fantastic view over the entire valley below. The masterpiece of the urban restructuring of the village is certainly Piazza Pio II and Corso Rossellino starting from there. Do not miss the alleys of the historic center.
