Discover Roccalbegna

Culture

Roccalbegna - Roccalbegna is a delightful medieval village practically intact. It rises 522 meters above sea level, has 950 inhabitants and is located in the upper valley of the Albegna river, in southern Tuscany, in the province of Grosseto. Wedged between impervious limestone cliffs at the end of Mount Amiata, Roccalbegna is at the foot of two cliffs, the Aldobrandesca fortress and the Sienese keep.

Magical medieval village, it was already fortified in 1200, although it counted only a few narrow houses around the fortress of the Aldobrandeschi, with walls that connected to the cliff with a fortress. Siena conquered it at the end of 1200, modernizing it and equipping it with a more regular urban layout. Siena invested a lot in Roccalbegna. Among the most important works it is worth mentioning the Church of San Pietro, of Romanesque-Gothic architecture with a beautiful portal and inside a precious polyptych by Lorenzetti, dated 1340. Interesting is the Maremma door. Seen from above Roccalbegna is a sea of red roofs. The village was the seat of important noble families, such as the Piccolomini and the Sforza.
