The town of stonemasons: Lettomanoppello

Nature Culture Curiosities

Lettomanoppello - At the foot of the Maiella (and in the park of the same name) is the village of Lettomanoppello. This is a welcoming place, known as the 'town of stonemasons'. This name derives from its great tradition: the craftsmanship of stone. The processing, engraving and chiselling techniques have in fact been handed down from father to son for centuries, thus generating works of art of great value.

This ability is conveyed in the altars and in the interiors of the numerous local churches, as in the case of the parish church dedicated to San Nicola di Bari (magnificent building of the thirteenth century). The charm of Lettomanoppello also resides in the rock: in particular, mention should be made of the Grotta delle Praie, one of the most important speleological destinations in Abruzzo. Here, in fact, the water has created two large galleries, generating beautifully smooth walls and numerous stalactites. The value of the local caves is such that for some years the town of Lettomanoppello was the seat of the National Speleology Meeting. Another fascinating destination is the hermitage of Sant'Angelo, located in a cavity 22 meters wide and 8 meters deep. The ruins of the religious building testify to a silent and mystical past.
