Events Culture Practical information

Urgnano - Urgnano is a small town in Bergamo but rich in history. It extends into the Bergamo plain and is very close to the city. The greatest historical testimony still visible in Urgnano, and an important place of interest, is the imposing Visconti castle, with its four columns, moats and bridges still present. Characteristic is its hanging garden with statues representing the seven deadly sins and a suggestive Renaissance fountain.

The finely frescoed interiors are also admirable. It is now owned by the municipality and often a venue for cultural and traditional events. To remember the 'Fortress of the mystery', event linked to the novel 'the name of the rose', or the 'Festa in Rocca' that animate the castle. Among the religious places worthy of a visit we remember: 'the sanctuary of Basella', in Lombard Gothic style, and the parish church dedicated to the saints Nazario and Celso, also of artistic value, which preserves a work attributed to the school of Tintoretto , and a suggestive 'fake dome' that with a perspective game deceives the eye into believing it is a real dome placed on the presbytery. Also of great beauty is the bell tower outside the parish church, in neoclassical style, with different styles at each height. Among other places of interest it is impossible to forget the African museum, with iconographic and various statues, which aims to focus attention on other cultures and on integration. It is also a place for events and artistic workshops.
