A Tuscan jewel

Nature Culture Leisure and entertainment Practical information

Carrara - Carrara is located between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apuan Alps north of Tuscany, has a natural environment of rare and unmistakable beauty, like a diamond. The city presents itself to tourists as the site of huge marble deposits. Carrara's link with the material dates back to Roman times. It is no coincidence that its name derives from cart, a means used to transport the precious blocks and its symbol is the wheel (of the wagons, in fact).

In fact, from these quarries comes the stone used to make the major public buildings and the numerous patrician residences of imperial Rome, exhibited in monuments and museums throughout the city. You can also find it in the magnificent Gothic-Renaissance religious buildings, when sculpture became the protagonist and some of the greatest works of masters such as Michelangelo, Bernini or Canova were born. It is still used today by artists from all over the world. Its internationally recognized reputation earned it the title of UNESCO Creative City of Craftsmanship in 2017. But every year marble is celebrated in various manifestations, exhibitions and events. All surrounded by a clear, uncontaminated and splendid atmosphere. Do not forget that Carrara overlooks the sea; the Marina di Carrara is another beautiful and singular reality not to be missed. Between marble, nature, the sea and art; Carrara will surely give an unforgettable experience to those who visit it.
