Discovering Canzano

Canzano - Canzano, Teramo, Abruzzo. Canzano is a hill town and is located 448 meters above sea level halfway between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines. Its particular geographical position makes it look like a natural amphitheater. Canzano boasts over a millennium of history, culture, tradition, art and genius. Near the town, just a few meters away, stands the church of San Salvatore, a national monument of the twelfth century.

The bell tower and the facade are, for the most part, original while the apse has several external lesions due to the instability of the ground. It has a three-nave plan and the interior is enriched with paintings of a certain value from the fifteenth century. The church of the Madonna dell'Alno, on the other hand, was built following the mystical apparitions of the year 1480. The plan is a Latin cross with a single nave and the interior is decorated with renowned frescoes. The re-enactment of the mystical apparition is celebrated on 18, 19 and 20 May with a religious procession and the latter is the most important event in the village. Canzano is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes: from the Gran Sasso chain to the Maiella massif. Gastronomy is one of the main resources of the area, renowned for the turkey alla canzanese. Below the local 'La tacchinella' there is a sort of tunnel characterized by low and pleasant temperatures, which is used today for special banquets but is also one of the attractions that tourists wish to admire. The center has narrow and shady alleys, typical of the village; in Piazza Risorgimento it is possible to see the church of San Biagio congrega, a former brotherhood of the Dominican fathers. Some of the noble palaces have well-preserved external arches, with unique details. The flagship of Canzano is the art of embroidery, art treated with love, dedication and commitment. There is a school dedicated to embroidery and exhibitions are held every year to showcase the beautiful works. 'The tower' belongs to the 15th century, what remains of one of the four medieval sighting posts.
