Roccamandolfi, the Borgo dei Briganti

Nature Culture Folklore and traditions Curiosities

Roccamandolfi - Roccamandolfi, in the province of Isernia, is a not very well known but certainly worthy tourist destination. If you want to start with the village, you can feel the weight of an ancient, medieval, but still present history. A well thought-out system of arrows and directions directs the tourist through the alleys and alleys, between stone houses and monuments.

At the beginning of the tour you are greeted by the Stationary Cross, a monument erected near the ancient entrance of the village by the Angevin rulers. It was probably built following a purge of heretics that took place in the castle above the village. The itinerary leads up to the main church, the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore, and ends at the Sanctuary of San Liberato (both architecturally fascinating structures). During the journey, the traditional costume of Roccamandolfi and numerous vestiges related to banditry are shown. This phenomenon raged in the town since the eighteenth century; the stories mix with the legend, as in the case of the brigand Sabatino Lombardi, known as "the Evil One". This and other testimonies have given Roccamandolfi the nickname of 'village of the Brigands'. The town is surrounded by the peaks of the Matese and by green forests. Just outside the city are two of the main local attractions. The first is the Tibetan bridge, suspended over the gorge carved by the Callora stream: here the thrill of height is offset by the unsettling beauty of the landscape. Beyond the bridge you can continue the trekking itinerary until its worthy conclusion: the Castle. It dominates the district, giving a breathtaking glance.
