The arch of San Lorenzo is another sign of the Roman era that is placed on the Via Latina. The splendor of the city is also found in medieval times, with the family of the Counts of Aquino. In 1600, after a dark period, the city resumed its former glory thanks to Duke Boncompagni. Due to a demographic decline, the city risks losing the title of municipality but in 1900 a field suitable for aviation was identified, a field that in '42 passed to the control of the German army. Aquino has been awarded twice for her faith and her valor in battle. In fact, in 2004 he was awarded the silver medal for civil merit and in 1974 by Pope Paul VI. The church of the Madonna della Libera is a Roman-style monument, the main portal contains a mosaic depicting the Madonna and Child. The Cathedral of Santi Costanzo Vescovo and San Tommaso d 'Aquino is the main place of worship in the city. It is especially remembered for the visit of Pope Paul VI who erected it as a Cathedral Basilica in honor of St. Thomas, here it is possible to find the relics of the two saints. The rib of San Tommaso and the tibia of San Costanzo. The typical dishes of the area are pasta and beans, garden potatoes seasoned with pork liver sausages and vegetables. Cured meats and cheeses are the strong points of the table, typical sweets are mustazzoli flavored with particular spices and struffoli, both of Roman origin. Aquino is also important for its inclusive projects, for example in 2004 the 'Remain Active' project started, a gymnastics project for the elderly. Historical re-enactments are among the most beautiful events held in the city. The historical re-enactment made by the historical re-enactment association takes care of staging the three historical eras that have marked the city such as the Roman, medieval and Second World War periods. Two events of national importance are the 'Giovenale prize' cultural event, which aims to re-evaluate the Giovenale gate. The 'St. Thomas Prize' is an event, which consists in the awarding of artists who in their works have found a connection with the works of the Saint. The museum of Aquino contains the archaeological and historical artistic testimonies of the city, inside it is possible to admire the sanctuary of Mephitis with objects relating to the cult of the goddess, of Juno and of the city, such as finds of common use such as jugs and bowls. We also have objects from the Counts of Aquinas and clothes used in the 1800s by the locals.
