Lago Verde: a jewel in Val di Susa

Nature Practical information

Lago Verde - A few steps from Bardonecchia, in the Valle Stretta on the border with France, there is a truly incredible place: the Green Lake. This is a small space of paradise capable of leaving every visitor speechless, thanks to the emerald green and crystalline color of the water mirror. The color of the Green Lake of Bardonecchia is determined by the presence of an alga that lives on the seabed, which gives it the shades of emerald green.

Probably the pH of these waters tends to alkaline, due to the magnesium salts contained in the dolomites overlooking the lake. This is also the reason for the long conservation of the trunks of the conifers (mainly larch and pine) that fall into the lake. The walk to get to Lago Verde starts from the grange of the valley, near the Re Magi and III Alpini refuges. Once the car has been parked in the dedicated space, it is possible to take the path that makes its way through large expanses of flowers and green meadows. The travel time to get to the lake is about 45 minutes. Following the signs for Lago Verde, walk along the path and once you reach the crossroads, turn right until you reach a small wooden bridge that crosses the Rio della Valle Stretta. From here begins the slightly more tiring part, the uphill one, which is not too long, however. The route then continues in a coniferous forest where a descent begins. Already from this point, among the branches of the trees, you will begin to glimpse the wonderful emerald shades of the Green Lake.
