The ancient Herculaneum

Ercolano - Herculaneum is located in Campania in the province of Naples and has 51600 inhabitants. Herculaneum is known worldwide for the archaeological excavations of the Roman city which is said to have been founded by Hercules in 1243 BC. Together with the excavations of Pompeii and Oplontis, they are part of the unesco world heritage sites.

The city was conquered by the Greeks, the Samnites and the Romans to later become a municipality. Thanks to Marco Nonio Balbo it experienced a flourishing period of rebirth thanks to numerous renovations but then in 62 it was hit by the Pompeii earthquake and later by the eruption of Vesuvius, but over the years it came back to life. Herculaneum is rich in religious structures such as the Basilica of Santa Maria a Pugliano, the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, the Church of Santa Caterina, the Church of Santa Maria del Pilar, the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Church of the Savior, and the Church of San Vito. We can also admire numerous villas, the virtual archaeological museum and the wonderful Vesuvius national park.
