Levanto capital of tranquility

Levanto - Levanto is a town of just over 5,000 inhabitants in the province of La Spezia, located in the western part of the Riviera of the capital, before the Cinque Terre. In Piazza del Comune there is the former Monastery of the Poor Clares, dating back to 1600, today the seat of the offices of the mayor, the Civic Library and the Information Center of the Cinque Terre Park.

The historic center, characterized by multi-storey houses with pastel-colored façades and narrow alleys, essentially winds between Via Saragoni and Via Garibaldi where there is a building that presents ancient caricatures depicted on the external walls known as 'The Grotesques' that once they had the task of describing to visitors from other cities what they would find inside the country, since the latter was not visible from the outside as it was entirely surrounded by defensive walls. From Via Guani, the ancient road where the shops and ovens were located, taking a staircase on the left you reach the Oratory of San Giacomo. Piazza della Loggia, which houses the Medieval Loggia in a single body with columns and round arches, is accessible from a narrow alley surrounded by the remains of the old walls. Once, given its proximity to the port, the building was the commercial heart, while today it has been used as an archive. Another place of interest is the Clock Tower, an integral part of the walls. The heart of the historic center of Levanto is undoubtedly the Church of Sant'Andrea which has the peculiarity of having a facade and bell tower made with strips of white Carrara marble alternated with strips of local dark green serpentine, with the entrance portal dominated by a carefully decorated rose window. Following the medieval walls you reach the Castle, now a private property. From the center through a staircase you go down to the seafront overlooked by beautiful villas. Levanto is chosen as a holiday destination by a growing number of tourists in search of clear sea, quiet atmosphere and the possibility to go around on foot or by bike.
