Avella: nutty scent, widespread museum and open-air archaeological site

Events Culture Food and wine Folklore and traditions Practical information

Avella - Avella is located in the heart of the Campania region, at the foot of the Paternio Mountains, and is known above all for the cultivation and processing of hazelnuts. It also seems that its name is linked to the fruit as in Latin nux avellana is precisely the fruit of the stone. The city represents a very important historical and artistic center, it is in fact called 'Avella city of art'.

It was an Etruscan and Samnite city but became of fundamental importance in Roman times, visible in the division into cardi and decumani. Among the most important archaeological sites are the funeral mausoleums and the Roman amphitheater, an arena for gladiators, with a capacity of 40,000 spectators. Another place of interest is the medieval castle, located on a hill, still largely visible. In the city center, in the current town hall square, there is the baronial palace with its splendid gardens. The city is to be considered as a 'widespread museum' given the many attractions scattered throughout the area. There are also many events such as the hazelnut festival, the theatrical review and the 'pane ammore e tarantella' festival.
