Pieve Santo Stefano, Hermitage of Cerbaiolo

Culture Folklore and traditions Practical information Curiosities

Pieve Santo Stefano - We are located in Arezzo, to be precise in Pieve Santo Stefano, in Val Tiberina, home of the National Diary Archive since 1984. Ancient city of Roman origin, formerly Suppetia, although there are finds dating back to the Bronze Age. In addition to the famous archive there is the Piccolo Museo del Diaro, where thousands of diaries, autobiographical texts, over 7300 memories of Italians are kept, considered one of the most important Italian museums in the world for the wealth of memories and life preserved there.

In Pieve, however, there is also a very particular place which is the Hermitage of Cerbaiolo, a sacred building of considerable religious settlement in a truly impervious environment. It was built in the eighth century, then donated in 1216 to San Francesco, it was inhabited until 1700 by the Franciscans. Heavily bombed in World War II, it was entirely restored by a hermit from the Little Company. The complex is articulated around a seventeenth-century cloister, has a church and a chapel, relevant for the fact that it is located with the western side resting on bare rock. A place absolutely to visit and admire, one of a kind.
