Submerged Archaeological Park

Nature Culture

Pozzuoli - The Archaeological Park of Baia is located in the Bay of Pozzuoli in the province of Naples; also known as the 'submerged Pompeii', here we find unique depths in the world that preserve the remains and ruins of the Roman city. The remains are submerged due to bradyseism, a volcanic phenomenon that consists in the raising and lowering of the earth compared to the sea level, which over the years has led to an upheaval of the coast of almost 400 meters.

Accompanied by the guides of the Centro Sub Campi Flegrei we can visit one of the most important sites of the park: the Nymphaeum of the Emperor Claudius, who had his own imperial palace right here, the Nymphaeum is the dining room and the room where guests were welcomed, on the sides of the room we can see a series of statues representing the dynasty of the emperor and at the bottom the scene of Ulysses and his companion Bayros before the blindness of the Cyclops Polyphemus, the statue of Ulysses does not have a head, as it has never been found, the statue of Polyphemus instead was withdrawn from the first palace before it was submerged by the waters. We also find a mosaic with white tiles and a very precious marble environment for its chromatography of very different colors, also this symbol of power. And finally the flooring which, thanks to a method of natural conservation such as the sand that covers it, is practically intact, in fact the guide discovers the floors that can be admired and photographed by visitors and then cover them.
