Acuto, religious village and Cesanese territory

Acuto - On the hill of the Sacco valley, today we are going to visit a small town: Acuto. The village, included among those of Ciociaria, is located in an uncontaminated environment. Its name appears for the first time in the year 1000 even if ancient testimonies make it go back to the pre-Roman age. We immediately arrive in the historic center, dating back to medieval times, where we can admire several churches; continuing we notice picturesque glimpses of the ancient castle of the village, which is currently private property.

Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most beautiful eighteenth-century churches in the region. Continuing to walk through the narrow streets of the historic center we meet another church, the Church of San Sebastiano, dating back to the 13th century and inside which spectacular frescoes were created in the 16th century, such as the Annunciation and the portrait of San Jerome. Other important places of worship are the leper church of Santa Maria Maddalena, the Church of San Pietro and the mother house of the sisters who worship the Blood of Christ. Before saying goodbye to this charming village, we stop to taste some of the local wines; Acuto is in fact part of the Cesanese del Piglio territory, the only DOCG wine of the Lazio region.
