The treasures of Pietralunga

Nature Culture

Pietralunga - Pietralunga is an ancient village in Umbria, located in the north-eastern part of the Alta Valtiberina. The center still retains the typical medieval aspect with its narrow alleys and walls, and is gathered around the remains of the 'Rocca Lombarda', an ancient fortification; going deeper into the heart of the historic center we find the main buildings such as Palazzo Fioriucci, Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Capitano del Popolo and Palazzo dell'Orologio.

From the artistic point of view the Pieve di Santa Maria is of great interest which dates back to 1200 and still preserves a fresco attributed to Raffaellino del Colle, depicting the Martyrdom of San Sebastiano; then the convent of S. Agostino inside which today there is the municipal library. Just outside the walls we find other buildings of important historical and artistic interest, the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Rimedi and the Pieve De 'Saddi, an early Christian basilica built around the crypt that once kept the remains of San Crescenziano. Located in the middle of the green we find the complex of Candeleto where we find the ornithological-naturalistic museum which houses a vast ornithological collection. It should not be forgotten that the village is part of the Franciscan path, traveled several times by San Francesco da Assisi to get to La Verna.
