The territory is mainly mountainous and rich in ridges, with a tourist vocation. Historically it belonged to the Grand Duchy of Parma, Liguria and Tuscany, so that traditions and culture are mixed and varied. The main churches date back to the medieval period and are the Duomo, dedicated to Santa Maria del Popolo and the church of the Santissima Annunziata. The Teatro della rosa is pleasant. The Cacciaguerra tower is certainly the most famous and imposing in the city, built in 1300 by Castruccio Cacciacani while the city was divided between Guelphs and Ghibellines. Piazza della Repubblica is the heart of the city, home to civic services and the famous Caffè degli Svizzera, a rare example of Art Nouveau style in Tuscany.
