Miletus, a city rich in history

Culture

Mileto - Mileto is a small town in the province of Vibo Valentia. In the 11th century it became the capital of the County of Calabria and Sicily under Ruggero the Norman. Of great historical interest are the remains of a cathedral from 1081 and the Benedictine Abbey of the Holy Trinity. The urban fabric of the town has the shape of a chessboard in which in the center we find the Villa Comunale surrounded by four orthogonal squares: Piazza Pio XII, Piazza Italia, Piazza Real Badia and Piazza Cattolica.

Not far from the villa we find the Cathedral of San Nicola and the Church of San Michele. Mileto has become famous throughout Italy thanks to its town Natuzza Evolo famous for its mystical apparitions of the Madonna and other saints and for the appearance of stigmata in the hands. In addition to the buildings already mentioned, the State Museum is also of great interest, established in 1997 to enhance the great artistic heritage of the city. It preserves numerous finds from the ancient Miletus. The Cathedral of San Nicola is in Romanesque-Lomabard style and inside you can admire a magnificent mosaic representing Christ and the Five Continents. Tombs and an ivory crucifix that belonged to Ferdinand II of Bourbon were found in the remains of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity. Finally, the Villa Comunale houses a beautiful monument by Roger the Norman.
