The historic center is spread over Piazza Alberica, on which is the theater of the Animosi, the most important in the city. The Cathedral is worth a visit, entirely covered in marble, with the rose window depicting a wheel, symbol of the city with the motto 'Fortitudo mea in rota' (in Latin: 'My strength is in the wheel'). Adjacent to the cathedral is the house of Michelangelo while moving towards the walls we find the Cybo Malaspina castle, an ancient residence that today houses an academy of fine arts which preserves inside some sculptures by Antonio Canova. There are many statues and marble installations scattered around the city: the monument to Garibaldi, to Giuseppe Mazzini and Maria Beatrice d'Este, for example. Carrara, however, also overlooks the sea, and this too is a prestigious tourist destination.
