Lake Bolsena and its villages

Culture Practical information

Bolsena - Lake Bolsena is a volcanic lake located in the northern part of the Lazio region, in the province of Viterbo. It is a very touristic area, rich in infrastructures such as campsites, hotels and agritourisms. The west coast is wilder and the human presence is less than in the east and south where the coasts are low and sandy and there are fields, olive trees, and vineyards.

Consequently, tourism is concentrated in this area of the lake in correspondence with three urban centers: Bolsena, Marta and Capodimonte. There are two islands in the lake: the Martana island, now uninhabited and not open to visitors because it is private property, and the Bisentina island which is part of the Capodimonte area. In addition to the evocative landscapes, worth a visit: the church of San Lorenzo Nuovo, and that of San Flaviano in Montefiascone, the Rocca di Valentano, the archaeological finds of Grotte di Castro such as the necropolis of the Pianezze and 'the hundred rooms', the residences Farnese in the municipalities of Gradoli, Marta and Valentano.
