Isole Tremiti - The Tremiti Islands are an archipelago of 5 islands in the Adriatic Sea 22 km north of the Gargano and 45 km east of Termoli. Administratively they are part of the province of Foggia. They can only be reached on foot, cars are not allowed. The blue and crystalline sea and the sandy beaches are the queens of the archipelago, therefore diving and snorkeling are practicable. Interesting local flora and fauna; the Mediterranean scrub reigns supreme but there is no shortage of pine forests and woods. Do not miss the caves, which can only be visited by boat, we mention the most famous: the sea ox, the violets, the swallows. Particularly the statue of Padre Pio located 14 meters deep between Capraia and San Nicola. Legend has it that Diomedes founded the islands, after defeating Troy he violently threw three rocks into the sea that formed the islands and retired there to live with his soldiers. The true story instead begins in the Middle Ages when the Benedictines founded a religious center, then destroyed by Slavic pirates in 1334. Later, after alternating events that often saw them uninhabited, Ferdinand IV claimed it in 1782 who made it a penal colony. Historical remains are: the walls, the castle and the mythological tomb of Diomede.
