Todi: the ideal city

Culture

Todi - Todi is a beautiful village in the province of Perugia. The town became famous in the 1990s when a study by the University of Kentucky called it the ideal city thanks to its perfect balance between agriculture, culture, art and food. Todi is also famous for being the birthplace of the poet and blessed Jacopone to whom the town paid homage with a bas-relief dating back to 1930.

The symbol of the city is an eagle. According to the legend, Todi should have been built along the banks of the Tiber but while the people who were founding it were on their lunch break an eagle grabbed their tablecloth and took it to the top of the hill. This event made him decide to build the city in the place where the eagle had left the tablecloth. In the Church of San Silvestro there is a portrait of the aforementioned Jacopone while his remains are preserved in the beautiful Gothic style church of San Fortunato. A curiosity lies in the fact that in the plaque the date of the death of the famous poet was brought forward to 10 years earlier due to the excommunication suffered by Pope Boniface VIII.
