Nature Culture Folklore and traditions Practical information Curiosities

Campomarino - In the province of Campobasso, bathed by the Adriatic Sea, stands the maritime citadel of Campomarino. It is a town known above all for its exposure to the coast and the sea, the clear waters and bathing accessible to all families. But, Campomarino is also linked to a Homeric legend, that of Diomede. In fact, the nearby Tremiti islands, his burial place, were since then called the Diomede islands. However, Campomarino is also home to monuments, attractions and history. The origins of the citadel appear to be mixed: from the Romans, to the Lombards, to the Albanians. Monuments such as the Church of Santa Maria a Mare and the Sanctuary of the Madonna Grande turn out to be real time machines: the Romanesque and ancient tendency prevails, in the architecture the tourist can perceive another dimension and era that surrounds a village that is sometimes exposed to modernity. In fact, the charm of the beaches, restaurants, shops is intertwined with the past of a maritime village, destined for discovery. Campomarino is therefore a place to live; it is advisable to do it during the city festivals: in San Giuseppe (March 19) and Santa Cristina (July 24), the city is colored with music, banquets, fireworks, religious rites and a lot of harmony. What, in short, distinguishes a unique place.
