The beauties of Catania
Culture
Catania - Catania, between naturalistic and monumental beauties, is one of the most picturesque cities in Sicily. Dominating it is Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. The heart of the town is Piazza Duomo where there is an imposing obelisk supported by a lava stone elephant. In front of it stands the Cathedral of Sant'Agata which represents a magnificent example of the Baroque style. (continues below the video)
On the sides of the main entrance of the church are the statues of Saints Peter and Paul while inside you can admire a splendid fresco depicting the saint to whom the sacred building is dedicated. To the right of the altar there is a reliquary which houses the remains of the virgin. These are carried in procession during the patronal feasts. On the square there is also the Palazzo degli Elefanti where the town hall is currently located and the Diocesan Museum which preserves, among other works, the fercolo used during the Feast of Sant'Agata. This event is very popular in the city and attracts thousands of faithful every year. Finally, Palazzo Biscari is worth a visit with its splendid architectural ornaments and frescoed rooms.
