Teramo, the capital of Abruzzo but not only ..

Culture Practical information

Teramo - Today we are in the capital of Abruzzo, in Teramo. The city has very ancient origins and in the historic center of Teramo there are important remains of the Roman and medieval period. Let's go immediately to find out which ones! Let's start with the most prestigious artistic work of the city, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in Romanesque style which then takes on a Gothic style in the upper part.

Located near the cathedral we then meet the Porta Madonna, or Porta Reale, an honorary arch to welcome the visit of Ferdinand I of Bourbon. Going further we can admire the Church of Sant'Anna dei Pompetti, the only early medieval building in Teramo and the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, just outside the walls, at Porta Madonna. Furthermore, you cannot miss a visit to the Civic Museum and the Domus and Mosaic of the Lion, inside which there is the Mosaic of the Lion, emblem of the archaeological history of Teramo. Moving slightly outside the historic center we find the Fonte della Noce, according to which anyone, drinking the water, would fall in love with the city; remains of the Roman theater, a few meters away from the Roman amphitheater, an almost unique case in the world; the Church, as well as a former Capuchin convent, founded by the Benedictine Fathers in 1150. Also on site, we can appreciate the conventual Church of San Domenico, in the Porta Romana district; the Palazzo dei Melatino, historic home of the famous Melatino family and finally the Francesco Savini Archaeological Museum, set up in one of the historic buildings of the city not far from the Cathedral.
