The Baroque square of Roccagorga

Culture

Roccagorga - Roccagorga can boast a beautiful central square built in Baroque style, perhaps little known but recognized by many as one of the most interesting in the province. The square was built in the second half of the seventeenth century by the Ginetti da Velletri family, with a large central fountain called the Rifolta. More than a fountain, it was a real closed oval-shaped swimming pool which was used to water the animals.

In it flowed the water from the source of Sant'Erasmo, as well as in other fountains scattered around the square for the benefit of the citizens. Today the Rifolta has a different appearance from what it originally had, as in the 2000s it was the subject of a renovation by the architect Eros Ciotti. The oval was opened, in order to give greater continuity with the square, and the fountain that was in the center moved to the bottom, on the churchyard that dominates the square, also Baroque, headed to Saints Leonardo and Erasmus. The church is in perfect alignment with the Doria Pamphili palace which is on the other side of the square.
