The Madonna of the Miracles of Alcamo

Alcamo - In Alcamo there is a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary in which an image of the Madonna considered miraculous is preserved, so much so that it is called the Madonna dei Miracoli. The devotion of the inhabitants of Alcamo towards this sacred effigy is very great and sinks into the mists of time. In fact, it is said that on 21 June 1547 some women went to the river to wash their clothes.

One of these women was blind and the other deaf. At one point, the women saw another woman, holding a baby, and were hit by a flurry of stones. The stones, however, did not hurt them, but filled them with an incredible feeling of well-being. Their husbands did not want to believe the story and went to investigate, but did not find anyone who could have thrown those stones. Later the notables of the municipality had the grove near the river cut down and found an arch of an old mill. There was a fresco depicting the Madonna. The fresco dates back to the thirteenth century and was defined as the Fonte della Misericordia, later becoming the Madonna dei Miracoli.
