History and current state of the church of San Francesco di Pozzuolo Martesana

Culture

Pozzuolo Martesana - Along what was once an important artery that connected Milan to Cassano d'Adda and Treviglio still stands today an ancient church which at the time of its construction must have been a pilgrimage destination. The church was originally dedicated to Santa Maria, but later the title passed to San Francesco. The date of the beginning of the erection of the sacred building is to be fixed around the end of the 13th century, when the adjoining convent was also built.

Most of the buildings that still develop today around the square cloister, however, date back to a later period, when Cardinal Pietro Peregrosso in his will churches were built other parts of the convent. In short, however, the structure experienced a rapid decline, so much so that in the eighteenth century the convent was suppressed and the building converted into agricultural relevance. Consolidation works were carried out only in the 1960s. The interior of the church still retains traces of the original frescoes, of which unfortunately only fragments remain.
