San Nicola. - The archipelago is located 12 miles from the Gargano and is made up of five islands, called diomedee, of which San Nicola is the largest and the capital. Myth tells that Diomede found death there and Aphrodite, out of pain, transformed her sailors into birds, or Averre, whose moans and groans still pervade the night and starry skies of the island.

Associated with the Gargano National Park, part of the coast was established in 1989 as a marine nature reserve to protect biodiversity. On the mother island, in addition to the beaches and the celestial sea, you can admire the Basilica of Santa Maria a Mare, a church-fortress that contains towers, walls and the cloister. The Cistercian monks who founded it, around the year one thousand, were annihilated by pirate raids and only a century later, the fortress was colonized by the order of the Lateran Canon. In the Church of San Nicola, you can visit a wooden crucifix from the 13th century and floor mosaics from the 11th century.
