Visit to Somaglia

Culture

Somaglia - Somaglia is a town located in the heart of the Po Valley, in the province of Lodi. The town is known for the homonymous service area on the motorway that connects Piacenza to Lodi and for being the birthplace of the journalist Mario Borsa. There are several traces that trace the existence of the town back to the time of the ancient Romans but the greatest development took place around the 14th century with the advent of the noble Cavazzi family.

They had the splendid Somaglia Castle built which currently consists of an older wing from the Middle Ages and a more modern one renovated during the 1600s. Various cultural activities take place inside and there is a small exhibition dedicated to the aforementioned Mario Borsa and to General Griffini. Very beautiful is also the Parish Church built towards the end of 1700 always at the behest of the noble Cavazzi. Among the most interesting works it houses we find the two Quadroni della Giudecca. Great importance is given to the nearby River Po which is bordered by cycle paths and paths that allow enthusiasts to make pleasant excursions. The Monticchie Nature Reserve is also suggestive, where rare specimens of terricolous frog live. Here you can take relaxing walks and bird watching. Finally, a typical Somaglia dish is risotto with saffron, sausage and raspadura. This last ingredient is obtained from a Lodi cheese which is 'rasped' with a special knife.
