A country within a country

Mèlito di Porto Salvo - What's at the end of our peninsula? In the southernmost point of Italy you can discover a small but great reality: Mèlito di Porto Salvo, one of the most important treasures of Ionian Calabria, characterized by breathtaking landscapes, crystal clear sea and a lot of history. The video illustrates the uniqueness of a country not well known to tourists, despite being extremely symbolic in every corner.

Mèlito reflects above all a mixture of different cultures: the Romans, the Byzantines, the Greeks took advantage of the position and the beauty of this inhabited center which, currently, has experienced a profound demographic expansion. Mèlito represents the end but also the beginning of a country. Giuseppe Garibaldi, with his thousand was welcomed twice in this city which, in addition to its deep historical and social roots, has an absolutely unique monumental and landscape heritage. To reach the citadel you have to face a long road called Via Lembo (nicknamed 'Lembo d'Italia', symbolizing the end of the boot) and the 'fountain of good water' which once flowed directly from the surrounding mountains. Later, it turns out that Mèlito was divided into Melito Alta and Melito Bassa: in the upper part, there are hills and sanctuaries, downstream there are shops dedicated to crafts and the Lungomare dei Mille, which houses the suggestive sanctuary of the Madonna di Porto Salvo. The promenade overlooking the Ionian Sea with Sicily as a backdrop, in particular Mount Etna, which offers wonderful views on clear nights. The city, in general, also reflects in the simplicity of the people who live there, a small Italy in all its immense indelible history.
