Pisticci, Calanchi and blue sea

Pisticci - Pisticci is a town of about 16,800 inhabitants in the province of Matera, 47 km south-east from the capital, near the Ionian coast of Lucania and the Metapontine coast, with the Marina di Pisticci 24 km away as a south-eastern outpost on the sea. Founded by the ancient Italic people of the Enotri, it then passed under the Greek, Roman and Norman dominations, acquiring varied and unique habits and customs.

It is known as the white city, for the white color of its small houses, painted with lime and with red roofs, lined up in long lines in the suggestive Dirupo district, overlapping in the shape of an S over a clayey relief at almost 360 m. SlM which with the erosion deriving from the incessant action of rainwater and winds has acquired conical conformations, the so-called Calanchi, thick with vertical grooves for an almost lunar effect. Among the historical places to visit in the first position there is certainly the Mother Church of Saints Peter and Paul, in Renaissance Romanesque style, which with its majestic beige-pink mass and the characteristic hemispherical dome dominates the old village from above. . In the Terravecchia district, the highest and oldest part of the center stands the Norman Castle, and the Abbey of Santa Maria del Casale, dating back to the year 1807 in Apulian Romanesque style, also has very ancient origins. Pisticci from the top of its cliff overlooks the magnificent sea not far away, where the Marina di Pisticci district, located on a long beach and surrounded by a splendid pine forest, acts as a link between the cultural tourism of the interior and the holiday one and seaside resort of the Ionian Sea.
