Visit Oratino

Culture

Oratino - Oratino is a small but delightful Molise village in the province of Campobasso. It rises 795 meters above sea level and has 1,700 inhabitants. In the central square of the town is the Giordano palace, a structure that is thought to date back to the second half of the 1400s, but the only certainty lies in the fact that it was renovated in the eighteenth century by the Giordano family, from which it took its name.

The most fascinating church in the town is that of Santa Maria Assunta, whose construction date is not known, but it is plausible to place it in the 13th-14th century. Renovated several times due to the earthquakes that damaged it, the last restoration work dates back to 1909. The village was called Loretinum in the 12th century, Ratino in the 15th century and finally Oratino. The etymology is Greek and means visible everywhere, therefore a panoramic place. A visit to the beautiful fortress is a must, given its strategic position, one of the most interesting examples of defense and sighting towers. The structure was built on a limestone rock formation between the 10th and 12th centuries. 12 meters high, it could be all that remains of an ancient collapsed castle.
